Looking for the ultimate Blackbeard experience? The Friends of Queen Anne's Revenge is proud to offer QAR Dive Down,
an exciting 2-day program for certified SCUBA divers. Because the wreck is a restricted archaeological site, diving the QAR is only available through this unique program. Participants will hear from scientists and archaeologists in a five-part lecture series designed to convey the historical, archaeological, geological, and ecological significance of QAR. In addition to breakfast and lunch daily, participants are treated to dinner at one of Morehead City's best restaurants, followed by dessert and coffee served alongside a presentation by colonial historian, Dr. Lindley Butler. On the second day, participants receive an extended briefing on The QAR Shipwreck Project and have the hands-on opportunity to pan for gold and other small artifacts before heading to the NC Maritime Museum to see the Blackbeard exhibit. The program concludes with a coveted dive on the Queen Anne's Revenge.
UPDATE
As of September 2009, a considerable amount of sand had moved on to the wreck site and there is much less of the wreck exposed. Whereas in past Dive Downs, the dives were primarily sightseeing, guided dives, in 2009 we included additional training for participants in archaeological techniques and procedures, something we will increase in 2010 sessions. Please come prepared to get dirty!
